Selecting a Spreading Area for Planned Applications

Previous topic Next topic

When you create or modify an application one of the items, you will have to select is the Area of the field where you want to spread the nutrient.  This feature allows planning for "make-up" nutrient applications on the parts of fields where manure cannot be applied do to seasonal or year-round restrictions.

You will be selecting the Area from a drop down list box. The items in the list will vary with the nutrient being spread and, in some cases, the season. For example, winter applications of a Manure/Biosolid have only one option – Spreadable. Spreadable in this case means the Winter Spreadable Acres from the field spreadable acres table. You can see some examples below.

When selecting the Area in a grid, each application has its own Area for spreading.

The Manure/Biosolid grid

NAP Select Spreadable Manure

The Dry or Liquid fertilizer grids

NAP Select Spreadable Fertilizer

When you select an area for an application the values for the applied acres are all pulled from the field spreadable acres table that you can access on the Fields screen. Those values are populated when you download and import farm data from SnapMaps.

Area Definitions for Manure/Biosolid Applications

Spreadable – The largest area of the field where applications may be appropriate based on mapping restrictions and season.

For winter applications, Spreadable is the Winter spreadable acres value in the field spreadable acres table.

For non-winter applications, Spreadable is different for 590 and WPDES Permitted farms (CAFO).

For 590 farm fields it is simply the Manure spreadable acres value in the field spreadable acres table.

For CAFO farm fields:

oNo SWQMA present – Spreadable is the Manure spreadable acres 25ft value

oWith SWQMA present – Spreadable acres defaults to the Manure spreadable acres 100ft value. The Manure spreadable acres 25ft value is used if winter spreading strategies 1 or 2 are followed.

Spreadable for Grazing applications:

The spreadable acres for grazing operations are the same as the cropping acres in all seasons because there are no seasonal or other restrictions on manure deposited by grazing animals.

Winter manure prohibited – The area of the field where manure cannot be applied when the soil is frozen and snow-covered because of proximity to surface water or direct conduits to groundwater or other restrictions.

For 590 farm fields, Winter manure prohibited is equal to the Cropping acres minus the Winter spreadable acres values.

For CAFO farm fields, Winter manure prohibited is equal to the Manure Spreadable acres (based on SWQMA strategy) minus the Manure spreadable acres winter.

Area Definitions for Fertilizer Applications

Entire Field The whole area that is cropped on a field, the Cropping Acres.

Manure prohibited  – The area of the field where manure should not be applied in any season.

For 590 farm fields, Manure prohibited is equal to the Manure prohibited acres in the field spreadable acres table.

For CAFO  farm fields, Manure prohibited defaults to the Manure prohibited acres 100ft value from the field spreadable acres table. If the field has a SWQMA, and either strategy 1 or 2 is followed, the Manure prohibited is equal to the Manure prohibited acres 25ft value.
